I live in Washington and we have had lots of rain. I have a Havanese female. I just had her clipped because she was getting so matted from playing in the mud and rain. Does anyone have suggestions for a good shampoo that won't dry her out?

I have a cocker spaniel and I use a conditioner as well as a conditioning gentle shampoo. There are so many brands available. Wal Mart has quite a selection. I found a nice gentle shampoo there that does not cause her to itch and scratch and chew at herself. I was told by a fellow cocker owner to use a product called "Coat Handler" but have not tried it yet.
With cockers, you have to brush and comb first and take care of tangles and matts b4 bathing or big trouble! The matts shrink when they are wet and it hurts!
I dilute the shampoo in a jug of water and use it that way.
Then I apply a thick conditioner and massage it in and rinse, rinse, rinse until the fur is all clean and product free.
Casey gets a bath every couple of weeks in summer and once monthly in winter. or when she starts to smell funny.
Then we brush and blow her dry....She and I are not fond of this part but we tolerate it well. LOL

I cant really help with wha products to buy but i can advize that you find something that allergy free and chemical free, maybe a natural rememdy shampoo and conditioner for irritable skin.....I use a prduct called petkleen. and according to the dogs coat i use specific 100% essential oils.
and brushing the dog before baths is much better if they dog has close to the skin tight matts. try and use a fine tooth comb, and a slicker bruch and tease the knots out, if they are near impossible to get out because of lack of tools then you could cut them out, but dont cut streight accross cut out from the coat in the direction the coat grown so it doesn't leave such a whole in the coat. but if you wanted to wash the dog with kots then your going to need alot of conditioner, and whilst drying the dog use the slicker that can also help with knots. to main tain your long haired dogs you can get the dogs clipped in their privates and under arms to stop matts and being stinky. which also helps the dogs health and hygeiene...
excuse the spelling errors guys.
Take care, cheers,
The groomer.

Fresh and clean oatmeal shampoo is by far the best for your dogs coat. i use it on all breeds its a proffesional product and it does the job. you can get it from petedge.com in 16 oz or gallon size

:) I've been a professional pet groomer for 13 years. I own two dogs who get dirty on the farm and need bathing often. The only thing I use on them is a shampoo you can get at your vet's office. It has no perfumes, dyes or soap. I even dilute this and it lasts a long time. It is called Vet Solutions-Oatmeal. The oatmeal shampoos you can get at walmart or out of catalogs all have soaps and perfumes. Hope this helps.
