My bitch (cross Labrador - Whippet)is one year old and she becomes sick whenever we travel in the car. She begins with slobbering all over and soon after she becomes really sick and throws up.

I have tried many different remedies, but to no avail. Some people tells me that she suffers from anxiety as she can be sick when the car is stationary.

Can anybody come up with a good suggestion ?.

Sincerely

If she does this when the car is stationery, then it is not travel sickness. It is anxiety.

Will she throw up if in the car long enough even if not moving?

I have a dog who was very anxious of the car. I solved it like this

1. sat in car with her, we have a crate in the back and I would sit right next to it, with door open (not moving, but in various locations meaning I would move the car and walk to it) and played, gave her a chew, her favorite treat something like that. After about 7-10 times this became quite fun for her and she would happily jump into the car.

2. Then I would put her in, give her a treat and drive for about 2-8 minutes. Stop and play with her again for about 10 minutes and drive back home.

3. Finally after she became confident with that I brought the ultimate treat out. I forget the name, but you put peanut butter in them and they llick them for hours.......however I would put her in the car, drive for about 10 mins, give her the treat and then leave her, at first for only a few minutes, but now she will happily wait in the car for me for quite some time. Obvioulsy, it is not that hot here and if it were high summer and it were hot I wouldn't leave her in the car anyway, but 80% of the time I don't have to worry about heat in Cornwall.

I just tried to make the car a fun experience.

If she is getting 'car sick' what remedies have you tried?

Obviously it took me some time for me to get my dog over the hump of anxiety in the car. She was three when I got her so am not sure what had happened before and she basically had to be re-trained.

Since that experience though, I take my puppies for three weekly rides from when their eyes open. I have never had a puppy afraid in the car! The new owners are thrilled as well!

Hope this helps.

The famous "Kong" boy dogs sure love those things!

Yupp I believe with anxiety, which I went through with casey, you have to go back to square One. Baby steps and pretend they are a puppy again and rebuild confidence and trust.
I had to housetrain casey when I got her and she was 5 yrs old!
Old dogs can learn new tricks. The owners may give up but the dog won't. They can always learn.
Good Luck. Love and patience and the above plan sounds like it may work for you too.

My german shepherd/husky mix loves to ride in cars but every now and then he acts like he is getting sick. He has never thrown up and loves to go for rides, but every now and then he'll just sit still, look out the front window or lay and he gets this funny look on his face. The reason I say all this is if you try the above tip and find out it's not anxiety it might help to try and keep him still in the car. They make a travel harness that might help for that. I like taking my dog on rides with me, sounds like you do too. Hope these tips help.

I have almost the same vest harness for Casey and I use it all the time for walking her. It is comfortable and works great for everything but especially in the car.
She can still lie down but at least she will not become a projectile in a collision. They are the greatest.
Jake and Casey travel very well in a car but Jake was a Daddy's boy with his previous owner who always let him ride in the front so he has to be restrained in the back seat or he constantly is trying to get in the front.
I am always looking for new products and enjoy checking out the websites but am curious as to where they are. US? or Canada?
