Hello all!!!! I have a new development.....I have kept momma flead and all of a sudden her pups that are 5 weeks old have fleas. Not many but I have seen a couple. I use fronlined on my adult dogs but I know I can't use it on babes yet.....Anything to help this matter????? I am looking for something homeopathic that is safe to use on these little ones? They are shitzu's..... I know I will call the vet but just wondering what other people use? If anything.....

I know there are some shampoos for puppies for fleas, also from what I remember, peppermint-based shampoos will help with the fleas...

Hmm I would hold off on any treatment that involves medicine, since technically you are putting pesticide on your pup's coat and for all we know it could have a negative reaction. Unless you are using a repellent specifically for puppies how about trying the following:

Diatomaceous earth (don't put around pups)

Beneficial nematodes (for killing flea larva in soil)

Vaccumming daily (quickly get rid of the bag)

and well there is the controversial one...garlic... people are iffy about giving it to their adult dogs, so I'm not sure it would be recommendable for a puppy.

I would forget the home remedies and get with your vet. they have products that are proven safe and effective.

Most of the time you can't really do anything until they are 12 weeks old. The vet may have an alternative, or newer, method for little ones though.

In the meantime vaccum, use flea/tick/mosquito spray on your yard, flea powder on your carpet and wash their bedding and yours and get some flea spray to go on your drapes/couch/chairs/etc.

good luck

Many of the better flea remedies are OK from 6 weeks. Like I said, talk to the vet.

Which ones and where are they? The only things I've seen (even at Petsmart) all say 12 weeks (for shampoo). I think I may have seen one that said 8 weeks.

Personally, I've never had issues with any puppies getting fleas so I've never looked at the age on any actual flea meds.

the vet said in another week I can use a bit of front line on them....Yeah....Mean while I use a bit of peppermint oil on the top of their little heads and it keeps the fleas out of their eyes......Thats about all it does though.....But at least that seems like a big help....
