Hey CM, Ive got a question.

When you either do a continental on a poodle or lets say poodle feet, face and tail, what blade do you use? I was always trained to either use a 10F or a 15F on pet dogs (depending), but Ive noticed a lot of the other exhibitors at shows use 30s and 40s, even on the continental (down the legs and hips)! Talk about a bare bum! Hehehe!:D

Ive been doing it on Napoley boy for a while now (40F) but Ive noticed that it leaves his paws very red and inflammed. Its not clipper burn as I have a very cool clipper and I constantly change blades and use cooling spray, Im always on top of that.;)

He gets so irritated by it that he constantly licks his paws and they become red and then of course end up with the red yeast staining, yuk!

So whats your ideas on this? I really like the look of the full-on 40 blade, but Im wondering if there is any kind of cooling/soothing gel or cream that I can apply to his paws afterwards to reduce the irritation. Oh also it would need to be non toxic as he is a licker. I was thinking along the lines of maybe an aloe gel? What do you think?

I use a 15reverse on feet... used to use a 40 and that happened twice and I had complaints so I just switched to a 15. I have always only used the 15 on bodies and such for the pets that I groom. I am gonna spell this wrong but I use a cream from my vet called 'Silver Sulfadiazine' my vet calls it SSD cream and it is a soothing cream that is really good for burns, rashes, hot spots, just about any kind of irritation. You might see if you can get some of that from your vet... That is really all I know to do. Poor humpy bear. :(

Yeah, poor old humpster, he really does get quite irritated by it.

If I cant find anything to help soothe his paws Ill just go back to using a 15 on his feet and face and use the 40 on the body and tail.:( I dont want to cause him any unneccessary discomfort.

But Ill ask my vet if he has the SSD cream and see how it goes.:)

Thanks for that!:D

Danielle, I use a 40 on both of my dogs for FFT being a show exhibitor.

I found when I first started putting Bo in a continental he had similar problems to what your boy is experiencing. Another poodle exhibitor suggested I use some gold bond power on him. It worked great, and being a white dog it looked quite fine.

And I seriously love that cake! I need to make myself one now.
