OK the decision has been made, in a few months time (I have other commitments to see through first) I will start down the road to becoming a qualified (with the proper certification) dog groomer. YAY!
So I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me on literature or things I could be doing before I begin (mid-September). The course is going to be tailored to my abilities (not much hehe) and at first I will learn to groom 'pets' and later on move on to groom to a show standard if i wish.
I will be starting with handling, bathing and grooming before any cutting take place (Howler with scissors or clippers! pooches beware!). I went to take a look today and the groomer was lovely, she breeds and shows her dogs and is a complete pro. she uses minimal to no restraints when grooming which i cant wait to learn. the whole salon had a very relaxed attitude and the theory work will soon be winging its way through the post to me!
I cant wait! Me and my Charlie Boy have finally made a decision :)
a very excited Howler (i know i know its ages away!)

Way to go!! I have thought about that as a career, but right now I can't afford it and my current scheduke at work does not allow me to go to school. Good luck!!

A really great book that I love is "Poodle Clipping and Grooming: The International Reference" by Shirley Kalestone. It does focus on poodles, but its overall advice on grooming equiptment, coat care, and techniques are excellen and apply to many different breeds.
I'm very excited for you and I hope you enjoy grooming!

Hey you and I are taking sorta same roads;) I'm hoping to become a dog groomer assistant soon! I've heard of one book on grooming that I'm hoping to get soon, but I don't know if it's good or not. I saw it in a magazine. It's called The stone guide to dog grooming for all breeds by ben and pearl stone. Maybe if others here have read it they can let me know if it's good or not ;)

That is the book I learned from Steven.. It is good but very old. I would recommend the groomers of the round table book instead... I don't have it but have heard wonderful things about it.

Do you think the information on it is outdated? I want to learn more about clips and basics like that, so I'm going to search these books up in our library catalogue.

After being in business for many years I found the Notes From the Grooming Table to be very good. You still can't beat hands on experience. If you can find a dog that someone wants shaved down try to pick out a certain breed that you want to practice and try that clip on the dog then shave it down. If you mess up the lines nobody knows but you!!;)

OK its official! I've put a deposit down for the course. So far ive been referred two books one being just a general book on dog health and recognising illness, the other being the kennel club breed standards.
Next month i will be getting some of the theory work through as i have been told i can get cracking on with that.
Im so excited!
