Hi all
My new puppy (1 yr old male chihuahua mix we got from a rescue) has this horrible habit of eating his poop. We have put him on some tablets that are sposed to stop this ....we guess it makes his poop untasty...and now he has started to eat his sister's poop.
At the same time he really stinks....we bath him more than a few times each week, but he smells so strongly that we can't stand him sitting on our laps. We have yet to get him fixed...and wonder if that will make a difference..
Any ideas?

I'd put that stuff in her food too. He's not likely to stop stinking until he quits doing that ... or it could be what you're feeding him. A change in diet might help too.

yes the magic ingredient in the stop eating poop stuff is msg and you need it in all food so all dogs poop is treated. LOL
Disgusting to us but they love it!
I hear this so much! and have seen it so often! LOL
Good Luck.....Follow them around and get that stuff scooped up quick!!!!
Yuck!!! I worry about Parvo in that situation.

msg is a powder that is a flavour enhancer added to cooking. Some people get headaches from it so a lot of Chinese Restaurants had to stop using it.
The Pet Stores selll a product with msg in it so people know what it is for.
You add it to the food of all the animals in the house until the puppy stops eating poop. If he continues to do this I would certainly look into changing his diet. He must be missing something. Most dogs love cat poop because of the ingredients in the cat food. Think it is richer than dog food.
msg = monosodium glutamate
Glutamate acid is in the Pet Store Product.
You only need a little bit in each batch of food. perhaps half a teaspoon I would think...Makes the poop taste not nice.

i herd of those tablests, we were going to get then but thanx for telling me they donot work. Well, watch your dog after it poo's, and if you see him turn around to chopm, then go outside and yell "no" in a string maner. You could also add a small spray with a water spray bottle. Be really carefull with this habit cause my dog got giardia, a bad desease from ingesting poo! effects: diarea, vomiting, wait loss, loss of appatite!!!

Please never yell at your dog for doing something that is natural - I know its not nice but by yelling you encourage them to be secretive about toileting and thats the last thing you want. Also by spraying the dog it could cause them to worry about going to the toilet. Not good.

I am sorry, but i strongley disagree. You never yell at your dog. Sorry if i said it like that. You have to be steern though. Let then no that htere is not poo eating. It is only a slight spray, and you never spray then for pooing, you spray them for eating. This lets them know that that one part is wrong.
I do not know about you guys, but i always tell my dog good boy for going potty, so he already knows that he is righ!!!
get it, or no?

I NEVER yell at my dog - no quicker way to break trust in my opinion. And there is other ways of teaching a dog not to eat poop than spraying with water - I wouldnt like it therefore wont do it to a dog.
My dog is always praised when she toilets outside and is fully housetrained.
Yes you have to be stern - but I never have to raise my voice - body language is far more important and can convey a message quicker than raising your voice.
As for the poo eating -how about when they have been luring them away with a toy - and a treat? Far kinder and will get the message across .

I agree with suz23. I hate to see people shout at or smack their dogs. I raise my dogs and my kids the same. POSITIVE PRAISE. I have a daxie who likes to chomp on the odd poop. I taught her the command leave. I say leave, she leaves it and I tell her she's a good girl. Her tail wags amazingly fast at this point!! The worst time is when we are out walking on the extension lead. I watch her like a hawk. If I see her show too much interest in anything then I say leave. Dogs have amazing hearing so I don't have to say it loud. She will be 2 in September, she isn't free of her love for poop but we're getting there!! Consistency and positive praise have helped me with this yucky habbit!!

I DO OT MEEN YELL AT THE DOG! I DO NOT YELL AT MY DOG!!! I also hat to see people hit there dog and spank them. Personaly i think it is a waste fo time. I always praise my dog and he loves and TRUSTES ME. But he resectes me as the boss. I will never let my dog own the house, or do everhting he wants. He will do what i want him to do. He is perfectly happy with that. I am not sure you understand the whole yelling thing. I do not know how to explain it, but if i said yelling, I honestly do not mean it like that. As for the spraying thing, different tequneces work for diferent people and dogs. Spraying has been over ruled in this house. Just a suggestion.

Please dont shout at me! I find some of your posts a little difficult to understand and it really wasnt clear if you were saying you DID yell or you didnt.
