Dog Groomer Accused of Cutting Dog's Ear Off and Gluing It Back On
Thursday, February 15, 2007

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
GIG HARBOR, Wash. — A Gig Harbor woman says she was "freaked out" while giving her dog a bath when its ear floated away.

The woman, Anni Sheriffius, told KIRO-TV that she believes a groomer cut off the dog's ear and tried to glue it back on with super glue.

The dog named Jasimin, a shi tzu, was treated for an infection.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says investigators are looking into possible charges of animal cruelty. But the pet grooming shop has shut down.

hmmmmm...surprise.....shop closed down....wonder why?
apparently this shop was unlicensed.
So sorry for this pup's trauma. Guess the dog owner was looking for a bargain.
Now she likely has no way of even suing the shop owner or pursuing charges against them. Very bad situation.
I can relate because I have a dog that needs regular grooming. I tried one and was not too thrilled with their work. Don't think they do very many cocker spaniels judging by the results I saw.
I have called a few others and I can almost tell when I am talking to them and asking questions, that their eyes are glazed over and they know very little about grooming a cocker. Understandable because there are not that many cockers in this town but there are a few so somebody is grooming them and doing a decent job. I just have to find that person or learn to do it myself.
In the meantime, I have a very shaggy cocker who will remain that way for a little bit longer.

Carol,

Hey I'm sure you will find the groomer doing all the cocker spaniels in your town, shouldn't be too hard to find, ask the owner when you see them?
Anyhow just a suggestion. Try and keep a comb going through your cockers coat because it it gets knotted that will be the end of having a nice cocker clip when you do find the groomer. maybe trim around the feet your self to keep the hairs from knotting inbetween the pads, can get nasty sometimes.
hope all is well...cheers...

smile :)

Carol I think the problem a lot of the time is not that they dont know what they are doing but that so many groomers just dont like grooming cockers - I dont know why but they seem to have such a bad reputation - here in the uk though its not quite so bad, I personally love grooming them - but I know a lot of groomers who dont.

any person groomer or anyone that could be that stupid should be charged with animal cruelty and should never be allowed to be in business

I do agree - while I must say we are grooming moving targets and even when the best care and attention istaken accidents DO happen - cutting off a dogs ear isnt just carelessness its negligence.

I heard about this story a few weeks ago. I must say I'm not surprised now days it dosn't happen more often. I say this because I worked for a short time for **** (not Named) and while I was there I saw people hired with no pryer experience as a groomer and because they have alot of bussiness Lots of advertisement put them right to work clipping dogs, of corse the manager was there but I just don't agree with this type of grooming training. I, needless to say didn't work there long. I opened another shop of my own.I was trained by very good groomers. Now days big business has taken over almost everything I find people think just because there bigger and have good press that they are the best. Groomers deal with many animal behavior problems in the very short time we have to groom them.I would advise anyone looking for a groomer to ask questions about whos doing there pet. I make it a point to ask owners about their pet in a form they fill out. Many say they never have had to do this before, but are happy that I take the time. Pets in my shop I guess get a small training sesion they learn that durring grooming its work time, but when the bows or bandannas come out they know its praise and play time. this has always worked for me. Their happy and seem to enjoy coming to see me and it makes for better groomed pets!

I have a groomer that loves grooming Casey.
I waited too long between visits this month so
lost the long hair on her ears which I love and
she had to be clipped real close but now I have
a standing monthly appointment and that will not happen again.
I get Casey clipped close except the outside of her ears and a cute
little bit of hair left on her tail.
I cannot maintain her when she has long hair on her body because
she digs in the dirt to make herself a nest. It gets dirty, matted
and impossible to deal with.
I am acquiring a Furminator because it is the greatest tool I have ever used
for deshedding both my dogs. You can fill a bag in half an hour and you
only have to do it once a month to keep the shedding to a minimum.
It is worth the money and saves a lot of work when brushing and
combing a cocker spaniel or any other breed.
It only removes the undercoat and it makes grooming so much easier.

Most high traffic groomers have no patience and very little experience with
cocker coats....The Zim site has videos available for learning how to
do it yourself. I wish I had the patience and the time.
I love my groomer...she has patience galore and lots of talent for cockers.

In canada groomers dont need a certificate from a school to groom. In Bc, there are no grooming schools left (I know cause I worked at the last one that just shut down) People have to learn grooming online.. can you believe that?! online!!!

How are you suppost to learn on-line, I suppose looking at the types of cuts etc, but On my god, talk about taking away the hands-on practice that is needed.

I've been grooming for 14 years and I think that stories like that give all of us a bad name. As for cockers there are many reasons why we don't like to do them. First of all they hate the dryer, their feets touched, combed out and the ones around here pee and poo all the time. Not to mention people want a long coat but don't bother brushing them, and they don't want to pay anything for the time. They take a long time to dry completely and ususally require a shave down before bathing. Most need to be muzzled or you spend alot of time cleaning up after them. I hate to hear "they're good at home" Well at home they don't go through what they do at the groomers. I do have some people that bathe the dog the night before and I clip them the next day. I don't do major brush outs because I think it's cruel, (try yanking your hair for awhile and see how it feels) That being said, I do groom a few cockers who are wonderful and I do think they are beautiful dogs but bad breeders have ruined them around here. I had a Springer Spaniel for 16 years and she was a little nuts. I loved her nayway. The well established groomers prefer not to do them around here but the ones just opening up will groom them.:)
