Hi Everyone

I have a 15 month old Italian Pomeranian (not a toy Pom!), he was given to me when he was 7 months old, so initially I never had him from a pup.

I'm lead to believe that the previous owner never walked him much, so he has never mixed with other dogs as such. Last Summer when I took him to the park, he was fine with other dogs and I even let him of the lead and he played with the other dogs, which was great to watch.
Recently, as the weather has been so bad, my local park is in bad condition so I have been walking Prince about 3 times a day around my local area. However, recently as soon as he spots another dog, he barks continually and can sometimes sound aggressive, be it that he only wants to get up close and personal with the other dog so he can play. Is this because he is just frustrated at being on the lead, or do you think there is something more underlining? I'm frightened that this behaviour will be deemed as a threat to other dogs and may cause them to fight and he will come of worse. Thankfully so far this has never happened. I have had many dogs over the years and have always trained them well, and to behave, but recently this barking has become uncontrollable! He just doesn't listen to my commands to stop etc..and it's getting embarrassing! :o If you know of any way in which I can control the barking, I would very much appreciate your help.

Other than that, he is well behaved, fun and a huge character and I wouldn't swap him for the world! :)

Regards

Hmmm I would not be letting him into an off-leash area until you get this behviour corrected.
Somewhere along the way, he has developed this attitude and it is up to you to show him that it is unacceptable by being in control.
Personally, I would immediately tell him "enough" and then pull him up and make him sit. Make sure he is paying attention only to you. As long as he is "allowed" to bark at people or dogs, he will continue to do so.
When the trainer helped me with my huge Lab who was headstrong, I was not allowed to repeat the commands, if she ignored the command, I had to growl. It was very embarrassing to me at first until I realized how effective it was. Once she realized I meant business I very seldom had to growl. LOL
I was the Alpha Dog for sure, growl and all.
The dog I had failed the Police exams but she was terrific for me.
