A K-9 dog hailed for 9/11 heroism has been cloned.
Scientists said Wednesday they have successfully produced five puppies who are genetic copies of Trackr, who hunted for victims of the World Trade Center (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/World+Trade+Center) terror attacks.
The German shepherd died in April at age 16 from a degenerative brain disorder. "Once in a lifetime, a dog comes along that not only captures the hearts of all he touches but also plays a private role in history," the dog's owner, James Symington (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/James+Symington), wrote last year in a winning essay in a contest to find the most "cloneworthy" dog.
Symington, a retired cop from Canada (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Canada), now lives in Los Angeles (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Los+Angeles).
He has said he hopes to put the five new dogs to work in search-and-rescue teams. Symington and Trackr were among the first K-9 teams to arrive at Ground Zero. Braving horrific conditions, the pair helped locate the last human survivor of 9/11 under some 30 feet of unstable debris.
