Hi everyone i need some help on how to try and get my dog to recall. I am doing Flyball with her at mo and she does all the flyball course and then when she is coming back to me with the ball after she has done all the jumps, she does this great. she will not come back to me with the ball, she runs straight passed and runs away with the ball and when she come close. which i want her do so i can fuss her for being good and play with her, she just runs off. I am having to keep trying for 5 mins to get her back to me to put her back on led. i have tried everything to get her trained to do this, but nothing is working. Hope someone can help.

Thanks Helen:rolleyes:

Sounds like your dog gets pretty excited and forgets that part of her obedience training.
LOL Bet it is frustrating for you!
Someone on here may have good advice about how to get her to do that.
Personally, I had a lab who would not return the stick. I always had to have another one in my hand to entice her to bring it back.
In flyball, doesn't the dog get a tuggy as a reward? Isn't that what makes them give up the ball?
Good Luck

yep she is meant to run back to me to play tug with her favorte toy i have im my hand( soft toy), but she runs straight pass me and wants to play with the ball she as just got, runs off then comes back drops ball, but will not come close enough for me to fuss or put her back on lead, she does this even when i let her off in park. so i have to kick the ball a couple of times so she know that when she get back to me its play time. i have been told to get her a tennis ball on a rope so i am going to get one of these tomorrow and try that, hope this helps, so she know coming back to me is the fun side off flyball and i am fun to come back to, and i may be able to get here back, if anyone has any tips to try i will try anything,

Thanks Helen:( :(

Helen,

You need to put tennis balls up at your house until she can trade the ball for the tug in all instances at home. Then when you are at flyball, with her on a long leash or far away from the practice start throwin the ball a bit from you and then make her trade for the tug. Because in a competition she may go for the other team's box or just go chase balls on the ground. It takes time. Unfortunately too many teams try to rush the process and you spend an inordinate about of time fixing problems. Some teams take 6 mos. to a year to train so that the dogs have proofed recalls and good swimmer turns.

You may just have to resort to having another ball. My Golden is a ball freak. So, when I started flyball and I saw the tug toys with a ball, I thought perfect, he'll love that. WRONG!! Why on earth would he want to get the ball-on- a-string that mom is holding when all these dogs running are dropping balls(to grab their tug) and I could easily get those instead. I gave up and he now comes back for a 2nd ball. Hey, if it works why not??:)

my dog used to do the same. run right by me. she hated the tuggy toy because i think she got her teeth caught in it once. that was enough for her. i now entice her with weiners and she loves it. my team mates helped as well. when she wouldn't come back to me they would shout at her and stamp their feet and say "go to Mom". and now she does, MOST OF THE TIME.
