Last week the kids were on school hols so we went for a drive to find our local beach (we've been in the area for 3 months so are getting to know our way around!!) The Dane has been ill lately so left him at home with the boxer and took the 4 dachshunds.

hi
The dogs love the beach, my husband and I went again last week whilst the kids were at school. Willow the eldest daxie doesn't like the sound of the waves, but Lara the silver dapple goes paddling!!!

Oh we're about 30 mins drive from the beach, we only go out of season but it's great. Only problem is the sandy mess in the car!!! We actually have a river at the bottom of our garden and walk down there every day.:) Willow the mini wire daxie loves to swim in the river.:D

an i come and live with you it sounds like heaven, i live in the city but the country is fiveminute drive away and the beach 20 mins do have a river 5 mins walk away bt prefer dogs not to swim in it as they always come out covered in oil and it s rather poluted. your dogs look wonderfully fit and healthy. :)

Thank you for saying my daxies look fit - I hate to see fat daxies!! We walk a 3 mile circuit most days.
The river at the bottom of our garden flows from the Welsh mountains. I wouldn't drink it but it looks pretty clean. We even have fish in it!:D
I used to live in the East Riding of Yorkshire. 30 mins from the river Humber. Born and raised a Yorkshire lass.

Although I no longer live there, I was born and bought up in Swansea - about 5 minutes from the beach. The sea-side has always seemed the natural place to go, wide open spaces, water and sand.
After leaving Swansea but before moving to Lancashire, I lived near woods and heath-land, which was OK for walking dogs, but I did not feel so comfortable when letting the better-behaved ones off the leash, they would disappear behind trees or in long grass and I would not see them for five minutes or more. However, I never lost one.
I now live very near a vast, flat sandy beach which is just perfect. They can run without fear (my fear) of getting hurt and love the pools and all the odds and ends the tide brings in. It is clean and safe, no rocks or rubbish.
I feel very lucky to be able to take them to a space to express themselves and run off their energy.
I read somewhere that so many minutes off the lead is worth so many minutes walking on the lead - can anybody remember what the ratio is please ?

Yes so many people give in to their daxies love of eating. You have to be very strict with them otherwise it can cause problems with their backs if they get overweight!!

Hi Chris
can't remember the ratio. But I do remember hearing that letting your dog sniff around is more tiring than a brisk walk as it exhausts them mentally. A dog who is mentally stimulated tires quicker than one who is not.
