The dog clinic at Petsmart offers medical insurance for animals. You will probably end up paying more for insurance than just paying your vet out of pocket.
You didn't say if you already aquired a puppy but if you haven't, my advise is to find a reputable breeder who will give you a certificate of health and a money back guarantee. I'm not saying that even with this in hand your pup won't ever get sick but it's certainly better than paying hundreds of dollars for a pup from a 'back yard' breeder.

I would research the cost of having the plan for your pet.
The time to get the insurance is BEFORE any problems are evident.
Check what the plan really covers and read it carefully.
With some dogs, there may be some items they will not cover due to predisposition in the breed.
The secret is homework. If you find it affordable, go for it.
With the recent pet food recall (considered an accident) lots of folks are covered and bet they are happy because kidney problems expensive to treat since the pup is at the vet's for a week or more on IV therapy.
Good Luck.....do the homework and be informed.

If you trust your vet, they will give you the low down on whether it is worth it or not. You could call multiple vets to see what their views on the products are for your dog and your situation. I would not trust the company selling the product to look at all sides. My vet has never recommended even with 4 dogs and 2 cats.:D
