What it is: More than compet 3,000 dogs representing 168 different breeds te for top honors.

DETROIT -- The Lyszczyk family from Clinton Township was paying close attention to the primped pooches at the Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show at Cobo Center on Saturday.

The three of them were on a mission during their first-ever visit to the show -- finding a potential pet.

The trio was among the thousands who attended the show.

More than 3,000 dogs representing 168 breeds from Afghan Hounds to Yorkshire Terriers were expected to compete for top dog honors Saturday as well as during Sunday's show which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Results from Saturday's show are expected at 6 p.m.

"We're looking at getting another dog in the spring when the weather breaks," said Dawn Lyszczyk. "So, we thought we'd come to the show and take a look at all the different breeds here and get some ideas."

The family is considering either a Rhodesian Ridgeback or a Foxhound, she said.

Her husband, Max, said they're looking for a dog to replace their last one, Buddy. The Labrador-Akita mix died recently from Lymphoma, a type of cancer, after 8 1/2 years with them.

"Our four-year-old son, Max, has had a pretty rough time with Buddy being gone," he said.

For his part, little Max, said, "I had a dog before, but now he's gone and in the sky."

He also said he was having fun looking at all the dogs at the show as mom and dad pulled him along in his blue wagon.

Meanwhile, other spectators at the show, such as Reba Willingham and her daughter, Brittany, came to see the different animals just because they are fond of the four-legged fur balls.

"We just love dogs," said Willingham, who has two at home -- a two-year-old Chihuahua named Chico and a seven year-old Rottweiler named Flex.

"We just wanted to come and look around at all the different kinds of dogs here," she said.

She said the dog that caught her eye at Saturday's show was the Chinese Crested, a small breed of dog that is born in both the hairless and Powder puff varieties.

The hairless Chinese Crested has tufts of fur on its head, tail and socks, but is mostly covered with soft skin. The Powder puff version has a long coat of fur.

"I've never seen anything like it before," Willingham said. "It just stands out."
