Hi everyone,

this is my first post. I am picking up my resecue dog next wednesday but i am worried because of my garden. We rent a house and are therefore not allowed to put a gate up so the dog will be able to run out if it goes outside.

I was wondering what people do if they haven't got a garden but they have a dog, do they take him out for a walk everytime he needs to go or do they have a large litter tray!!!!

help!!!

thanks

Sorry but if you do not have a fenced area, you have to take him on a leash eveytime.
I have the same problem until I correct that next month.
I am lucky, both my dogs are trained to go outside and do their business without leaving the property but I am right there the whole time.
We go for many walks, just around the corner sometimes until they do their business and get a little sniffing over with.
You may want to consider a long training leash attached to the doorknob so you can let the dog out on his own in your yard or hang onto it yourself and stand in the doorway. I trained Jake this way.
When I first got each dog, I tethered them to me with a long leash so I always knew what was going on with them. Neither of them communicated well when they wanted to go out so I kept track of them until they were trained to let me know by going to the door.

Good Luck and

Can you put a cable out back so your pup can relieve itself?

Walk walk walk is what your dog would say! If they don't get exercise on a regular basis he/she could very well develop behavioral issues. believe me, I learned this the hard way. :)

A zip line might work so the dog can run around some all you need is some rope 2 trees or poles and a long lead to clip to it just be sure the dog can't climb any thing that will keep its feet from touching the ground if you will not be with him all the time I had a friend whos dog hung after climbing a fence while tied up

I've trained both of my dogs to walk off-leash... it seems to take them less time to do their business when they're "unattatched" to anything.

One other thing to consider is that when you take the dog out dont get into the habit of immediately turning for home the second hes done his business - sometimes (and not all dogs) they will drag out the toilet business in the hope of extending the walk ;o)

I have a large fenced in yard, I just open my back door & say "come on babies"
but I still take them for a walk

I would say that if you use this method, please always be out there with your dog. When I was 12 we had a beautiful German Shepard and no fence. My step-dad did the line between two poles. She had nothing to climb; she merely walked around the pole until she couldn't figure out how to unwind herself and hung herself. That was the worst ever. As an alternative, you could tether her to a stake in the ground, as long is there is nothing she could wind around, but walking sounds like the best idea.

We used invisible fence before we moved to our new house. We were also in a rental and it only took a few days for our dog to learn his boundary. Some might not appreciate the fact that the dog was shocked a couple of times. However the settings can be adjusted and a warning is given to the dog with the collar. It was a better solution for us than having to tie our dog. He was free to move about his own yard and enjoyed watching the neighborhood go by.
