Please help. My 16 week old Berner is having loose stool ( like cornmeal) no blood, no mucus...just like cornmeal. He has NOT lost his appetite...and still playing with his sister.....just having 4-5 stools a day which seems normal for a pup...but really loose. I have not changed his food....but we do have a water softener now and wonder if the water has changed his stool. His sister is fine but I know that does not mean he might be sensitive to things. I heard that pumpkin can "firm" up his stool...but I have tried that a few times and it does not seem to work. His stool is better in the morning, but as the day progresses and he has 3 meals in him...it gets more and more loose and more often. Sorry for such a YUCKY topic, but trying to save going to the vet.
Thank you

I have had a terrible time with one of my Berners stools...he was put on an antibiotic and Science diet i/d and did much better while he was on all that. THen gradually started up again when put back on his regular food. I took him back to the vet....with no parasites, no bugs, etc. and he thought he might have an allergy. So...bought Blue Buffalo-no wheat, soy or corn....started him....his loose stools got worse. SO...went back and picked up the i/d canned food again...and now he is better. But have no idea what to do from here....can he be on this the rest of his life? should I try the kibble i/d? is this good enough nutrition for a LARGE BREED puppy? HELP PLEASE??? Any suggestions on good foods for dogs with sensitive tummies? Thanks everyone for ANY suggestions :)

I'd probably keep him on what works for now until he gets a little older. I haven't had really much of an issue with this except for when my pup was on antibiotic for bladder infection. I would work on the can stuff for awhile and then try adding some of the kibble and see if you can mix it for awhile...Puppies are so sensitive that I would keep him on what works for now.

If what your using works, stick with it. The only other thing you could do to supplement his diet (without upsetting his stomach) is to give boiled rice, chicken, turkey, ground beef or even green beans or other veggies (no corn and all without sugar). When our dogs had upset stomachs the vet told us to lay off the regular dog food for a few days to a week until the stools were back to normal. So we had to feed rice and chicken (or a mixture of the above items) until things were normal again.
