Before you read my entry, you need to know that this was written more than 20 years ago as my way of dealing with the death of a dear friend. This is not the same as the original as that was lost some time ago and I am not willing to dig into that old scar deep enough to re-create it completely. Even to this day and in it abbrivated form, reading it makes me cry, but then again, I still wear Blazer's dog-tags on a chain around my neck, and the nym I have been using ever since my first day on-line is in tribute to him.
MY BEST FRIEND
My best friend died last week. With his untimely departure, I find that I have lost so much more than just a dear friend. He was my anchor and helped to keep me sane. No matter how dark, twisted or painful the trail, as my navigator he always showed me the way home. He was my light, and he held the darkness at bay.
Blazer was a wolf/shepherd mix 85 lbs. of happy go lucky lap puppy, always so eager to please he would gladly do anything I asked of him. He was also known as Blazer Bear the Wonder Dog, for he required no training. Instinctively he seemed to know what I desired and would often do it before I could ask. He knew his left from his right, understood some spelling, and even taught himself how to open doors. Blazer was the kind of dog that a truely lucky man might find once in his lifetime.
I’ll never forget the time that he jumped from a second floor window rather than be left behind, for that was the one thing he could not stand. All he ever asked of life was to go anywhere / everywhere with his man. Those times when he had to stay, he would not eat or drink until I returned, he would only cry.
This time I’m the one who had to stay and I’m the one who cries. Blazer was my bear, my lifeguard and is MY BEST FRIEND! Oh Bear, this is so unfair, I wasn’t ready, YOU LEFT TO SOON! Blazer it is so hard to find my way with out you! I love you and I miss you. I know how lucky I was to find you!
Run free Bear. Rest in peace my fried. We will meet again.
Dedicated in loving memory to the one and only Blazer Bear from his man.
