Rottweilers rip off Hamilton tot's ear
By CP

HAMILTON -- A two-year-old boy is in stable condition in a Hamilton hospital after he was viciously attacked by two Rottweilers on Christmas Day.

The dogs tore into the child on a playground -- witnesses said one of the boy's ears was ripped off and his cheek was gaping open.

It's unclear who was supervising the toddler on an early evening walk and it's not known why the dogs attacked the boy.

The 16-month-old male and female Rottweilers -- who had escaped before -- are in quarantine and will be put down.

Police found the owners 18 hours later, although they did not know their dogs had gotten loose.

Is it that these dogs are genetically predisposed to being aggressive or is it how they are raised? And does the media pickup on the Pitt Bull and Rottweiler attacks, while not reporting ones by other dogs?

it isnt nothing to do with the breed its how theyre raised i have 4 pitbulls and none are agressive unless they know our dogs are friendly and ive took them to shows and they didnt bark or show any signes of aggresion.pitbulls arent originaly aggressive to humans they were used as fighting dogs and if raised correctly they wont be aggressive towards any human or animal. the only reason pitbulls and have such a bad rep is because of the media that dosent do research they just automaticaly say theyre vicious.so before u judge the breed look into it more and read some books and see some dogs 4 urself

I just got finished reading an article about a family pitt who killed a little girl. The dog belonged to the family and knew the child. So that leaves me under the impression that maybe the pitts temperaments aren't stable. I also started noticing that many places are now banning pitts?????

Okay number one,Its a sad situation and awful accident but thank god the child was not killed. The child was not under proper supervision apparently. The child could have provocted the dogs. The dogs may have been badly bred and could have temperment problems. Maybe the dogs just havent been around young children. DONT JUDGE THE DOGS FROM THE ARTICLE The media makes the accident seem so bad and I am not saying that its not but there are lots of factors to be concidered before judging the dogs or the childs parents. Those poor dog owners have lost members of their family and are probably just as upset as the parents of the child. Pitts have been badly bred and the they have to pay the price for stupid humans who have done it to them. I personally have never know a pit so I cant judge them but I have heard people who have them say theirs are not aggressive. I believe if you own them you must be responsible and I dont believe they should be around kids unsupervised at all. I personally would not own one because of the liability but I dont agree on banning them. They think banning them will make it better but its only gonna make it worse. They will still have, own and breed them no matter what the goverment says. I think you should know who your dog came from and be very picky about the breeders and their dogs and the dogs before them.

This goes with any breed of dog you own. Especially the part about not being around kids unsupervised

ITS NOT ABOUT IT KNOWING A FAMILY PET ITS ABOUT HOW IT IS RAISED IF IT WAS CHAINED UP AND NEVER PLAYED WTH OR SOMETHING THEN THE DOG WOULD BE AGGRESSIVE AND IVE READ ALL THE BOOKS ON PITS THE ONLY WAY FOR THEM TO BE AGGRESSIVE BEFORE SIX MONTH AND/OR WITH TRAINING IS IF THEYRE BRAIN DAMAGED SO IT WAS EITHER THE PEOPLES FAULT OR IT WAS THE DOG HAD BRAIN DAMAGE SO DONT JUDGE ANY PIT CUZ ANY DOG CAN ATTACK AND IF U LOOK IT UP PITS ONLY CAUSE A SMALL NUMBER OF DEATHS A YEAR NOT THEYRE FAULT THE OWNERS FAULT SO THE END P.S. SORRY IFF I OFFENDED ANY1 IM NOT TRYING TO START PROBLEMS ITS JUST PEOPLE WHO JUDGE PITS GET ME TICKED OFF

i have a loving and gentle rottweiler puppy of 5 months and i also have a 3 year old son he and the dog are the best of friends and play toghether for hours i agree that if a dog is brought up and socialised correctly there should me no reason why he or she should become aggressive. i think people have become so quick to judge this breed believing that all the breed is aggressive and dangerous when i am out walking weiley people will cross the street just so they dont have to walk past him and they will drag their kids away if they want to stroke him but who can blame them really when there has been so much negative press around about them but why is it when rottweilers achieve something good not a big deal is made out of that? i rottwieller called becky has just won PAT dog of the year which just goes to show that they can be brilliant when brought up correctly!! i strongly believe that there are far more gentle loving rotties out there than aggressive dangerous ones!!

Every dog has the POTENTIAL to bite.
I would never leave my gentle Casey alone with a toddler because of the danger the child could hurt her and cause her to retaliate.
It is unlikely, but I am sure most owners never expect their dogs to ever bite or hurt a child either.
Unrestrained dogs wandering a neighbourhood are a nightmare.
Badly bred dogs ending up in homes where they are not socialized or obedience trained are also bad news waiting to happen.
Recently, an older child was attacked by a dog owned by her friend. She mad the mistake of putting her face in the face of the dog and it bit her right in the face. A dog who is socialized and obedience trained perhaps would not have reacted this way. Who is to know for sure.
The girl has scars for life. The dog is now gone and a family grieves.
These situations are so preventable.
I walk Casey a lot in my neighbourhood and one day, as we passed a certain house, the owner was trying to lock her front door before going out so her boxer was standing beside her and the leash was on the ground. The second the dog spotted Casey it was up and on top of her. The owner being almost smaller than her dog was having a great deal of trouble getting that muscular dog off my poor little cocker spaniel as she yelped in terror.
This owner knows her dog is aggressive to other dogs. She normally is very responsible and keeps her dog restrained and inside a fenced yard at all times. But a moment of inattention and look what happens.
It could have been prevented with the right attention as a puppy.

I have had a rottie for six years now, I got her from an spca in British Columbia Canada, When I first seen her I did not want anything to do with her because of the stigmitism of the rottie, She was the first dog I saw and said no way. I went through the pens four times before I came back to honey. I was going to go and look at the dog that was with her and she jumped up and pinned me against the fence rubbed her face all over mine and I knew it was love at first sight. Honey had been beaten very badly when I first got her and any man that tried to toucb her she would bite. As I said earlier I have now had her for 6 years and now anyone can pet her, everybody that knows Honey are glad to see her. She has to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. Trust me if you get a rottie that is not trained it is easy to train. I can go anywhere with her and she just loves to be petted. But make no mistakes about it, if anyone were to hurt me or threaten me in any way she would protect me,

hi weiley is my first rottie and the same happen to him he was scared of men. and the man that had him before me had him tied up in his garden and would not touch him so he was nervous about people but i have had him for a month now and he is coming along great and i agree he has been so easy to train i also have a three year old son and they are best mates! but he really dislikes dogs so that is our next step in training i think it will be touch but worth the hard work!

Thank you so much for the reply. I have had dogs on and off in my life, however since I have Honey there is no other dog that will ever compare to her. She is so intense sometimes but I have never questioned her love for me, and I sometimes wonder if the next one in the next twenty years will be full Rottie. I know how you feel about yours as you do mine, best dog in the worlk
