i have used in the past a homeopthy remady called rescue remady, you can get it from health shops and pharmacies generaly humans use three drops on their toungue and it calms you down with out making you drowsey, a couple of drops on dogs tongue or in their water works wonders again without them becoming drousy. i have used it on several of my dogs when they go through that scatty nevous stage between four and six months old and on my self in stressful situations like competitions and exams.
also take you dog a toy or try a crate with a blanket over or a blanket on the seat so your dog can tunnel into it it may feel safer.

I too have used Rescue Remedy with pretty good results. The other thing to do is to slowly get the dog used to the car. Put it in the car and sit with it without going anywhere. Then move up to turning on the engine. Praising the dog for being calm, don't baby if gets antsy as then it is being rewarded. You could even treat it for appropriate behavior. Then just drive it around the block every once in a while. Crate training helps immensely. I know this takes time but helps in stages so all of you have a happy time traveling together. Good luck.

The rescue remedy can be effective. I have a standard schnauzer who has adjusted to long drives. I do find that she pants and carries on until I open the window-even just a crack so she gets the fresh air. I was thinking that with all the windows closed, its like there is increased pressure within the cabin of the car.
Cagney always settles with the window closest to her open just a crack. It's weird but true!!
