Marine War Dog Rex

After reading some of the responses on here it is obvious I should have explained this video better. I was Rex's handler for 3 years. Rex has a very unique personality. He growled when he was being pet. I had fun with him cause the more I pet him the more he growled. At first I thought maybe I shouldn't pet him but he always came back for more and kept growling when being pet, kind of like a cat when it purrs. I know it sounds crazy but that's what made Rex so awesome, he was just unique like that. He did not like it when I gave his leash for someone else to hold. He would growl and whine at me so that I would come back to take his leash. If you watch the video you will hear him whining after he growls because he wants me to come back around the fence to take his leash back. Him growling looks nasty and scary but if you knew him you knew that he was just a strange dog that growled to get some affection. If you want to know how much I loved him then read this-Rexy Too Sexy (http://k9pride.wordpress.com/2008/04/22/rexy-too-sexy/)

I am thinking that the growl would not signal love to me:) Certainly I would feel very very safe.

Yikes! If that's a love growl, I sure wouldn't want to see his serious growl! I bet who was ever on the other side of that fence was real glad for that fence!

We've had cats come through the shelter who make horrible noises.....in affection. I think they learn these weird behavoirs from their moms. Some make such awful screeching sounds you'd think they were attacking or being attacked...but no..they're just talking to us humans!
I think Rex is doing the same sort of thing. I can detect no snarl when he's up close and growling...and he's inhaling while doing it...I think he "learned" this from his mom....He's a beautiful dog...
Sidenote: Marley makes a growling noise at her toys. Only when she's playing with them by her self...usually when she's chasing it down after having tossed it from her mouth...

I found it funny - my male collie talks too and when he curls his lip up and grumbles and growls it's not nasty it's just a way of comunicating the only way he knows how.

I have seen 2 dogs in my life that also do this. THey smile at you. The first was a giant black lab who bounded across the ditch towards me and my daughter, with the "snarl" on. But there was a decided lack of aggression int he rest of his body, so we just waited for him to come up to us. He only wanted a petting. He was so lovely.
THe doggy daycare where Marley goes has a yorkie that also "smiles' But only until you pet her, then she won't smile again for you until the next visit. There is absolutely no aggression in it. I think they see us smiling at them and learn it's a form of human communication. I love it.

I have a cocker that will do it too and I think it is a sign of submission. Like a wild pack of wolves reunited a submissive wolf will smile at the more dominant wolf. Still very cute though :)
