I thought it might be useful for some if there were tips on the basic training every dog should have so i thought i would share some of the training tips i use and also if any one else has good ideas they too can add to the posts, if you dont like the idea then please tell me and i wont do any more.
To train the basic sit there are many ways to do it but the one i find the most useful goes like this.
1. With your dog standing infront of you, get a small titbit, hold at the tip of the nose of your dog, then slowly move backwards but keep at the same hight so you are moving the treat towards the dogs tail.
2. Your dog should follow the treat whith his head moving it backward and lowering his bottom at the same. As soon as his bottom touches the floor give the treat and at same time good dog nice sit.
3. If your dog moves in any other direction when you are moving the treat then bring the treat back to the original start position and try again until your dog works out you want him to follow the treat back.
4. Once your dog has the idea of following the treat into a sit, then you can start putting the command sit just as you start to put the dog into position. only every do the one command or your dog will learn that they can have several commands before they have to sit.
5. Only ever give the reward if your dog sits.
6. soon you will see that when your dog sees the treat and hears the word sit they will start to sit, you can then start to increase the legnth of time before you give your dog the treat first a second then two etc.
7. you will also notice that your dog will start to sit quicker and you can then reduce the treat in your hand until there is no treat and your dog is following the hand movement which inturn can be used as a hand signal.
8. always start training with limited distractions so start at home and practice in different rooms, and the garden, also try on walks but remember the more distractions the harder the training becomes so the motivation may need to be increase in the house with noone there use a plain dog buscuit but out on a wqalk with other dogs and running children then a hot dog might be more of an attention keeper.
9. To stregnthen commands and your dogs response the aim is to reduce the reward so you only give it to your dog intermitantly so every tenth or so sit command. by doing this it keeps your dog ever hopeful of a reward and therfor will be keen to do the command just incase there is a treat and when they get it wohoo their behaviour will be even more stronger the next time.
10. remember that bad behaviours are learnt in the same way so never reward a half sit or a failed sit make your dog repeat the excersise and reward when correct or you will be establishing poor sits and a dog that listens to the 6-10 command given and not the first.
Dont forget to get other family members to do the training too so they too can have fun, bonding and controle over the dog too.
i hope this helps people and if any one has other effective ways of the sit then please add. also would you like tips on other commands and training
