Best exercise pal is your dog

Walking the dog could make us happier and healthier than going to the gym, reports LUCY STEPHENS

JANUARY is the time many of us sign up to a gym to pound away those excess Christmas pounds.

But, according to a new survey, we could actually be better off walking the dog than slogging away on the treadmill.

Research commissioned by Butcher's Dog Food found walking a dog daily lowered blood pressure, slowed heart rates, reduced stress and enabled the walker to recover more quickly after a burst of strenuous activity.

The study of more than 1,500 dog owners and gym goers with an average age of 47 found: l The average dog walker trod 676 miles a year - 208 miles than gym goers l Dog owners walked the equivalent distance as Bangkok to London over their pet's lifetime l A third of York's residents were gym members, while 19 per cent had dogs l Most dog walkers were likely to stick to their routine, whereas just over half of gym goers lost interest after two or three months l More than half of gym members reported suffering high stress, compared with 35 per cent of dog walkers.

Dog walkers and gym goers were put on the stepping machine to measure how quickly they recovered after strenuous exercise.

While dog walkers' heart rate had returned to nearly resting rate after eight minutes exercise, the heart rate of gym members was still 29 beats above resting level.

One York woman who is testament to the value of dog walking is Julie Jones, from Rawcliffe, who has lost an astonishing 19 and a half stone after her weight had ballooned to more than 35 stone.

As reported in The Press last month, Julie shed the pounds through determined dieting at Slimming World, but she also swears by the exercise she gets from puppy walking for the charity Guide Dogs For The Blind.

I can testify to the benefits of walking dogs, although I am lucky in that I do not need to lose weight. I take six dogs, two at a time, for a 30 minute walk before work and the same again in the evening. I do not know how many miles I cover, it doesn't matter that much to me. Also, I take them onto the beach as often as I can so the 30 minutes includes running and trotting around, which is even better for them. On weekends I usually double the time. I feel fit and healthy and do not need to watch what I eat. It doesn't cost anything and I have created a close bond with the six that accompany me. It has to be better than sitting around.

Amen to that Chris. If we did not have winter to contend with I would have 12 months of exercise every year. I still walk in the winter but nowhere near the amount I do in the nice weather.
I love the fitness I achieve with the regular walking.
The snow is gone here but we still do not have the warm temps yet.
I am becoming impatient to have Spring and Summer to allow us to get going!

Yup I agree with that article. Walking the dogs is excellent in everyway. Much more fun that being stuck in the gym. Although the gym works for winter whether when it is slippery. Our four legged friends are good for so much.:)

I'm not sure if we are going to get any more winters around here. Time and again we are being told that the last winter was the warmest on record, that the last summer was the hottest. And this summer is supposed to be another above average (although what is average any longer ?). We saw snow for about 10 minutes earlier this year, but that was it. No ice.
Which means that I am fortunate to be able to walk all year round - only very heavy rain discourages the dogs - they end up shaking their ears every 10 yards or so. [Cavaliers' ears seem to stay wet after every other part of their coat had dried !]
Again I am fortunate to live near a very large, sandy beach -I take them 4,5 or 6 at a time down to the water's edge (this can take 30 minutes on some occasions) for them to paddle and run in the sea. The walk back dries them off and by the time we get home, all they want to do is have a drink of water and sleep. Wonderful !! These summer walks on the beach are the most enjoyable and make the effort of getting out all the more worthwhile.
The good health and fitness of our dogs has been remarked upon by our vet, but she said nothing about me !
There is a neighbour of mine who recently suggested I was walking the legs off my TWO dogs - I told him it was ME who was getting shorter, every time he saw me passing in the street, I was with two different dogs from half an hour previously.

My two were shocked to see the snow again this morning!!!
Casey loves snow and runs her nose thru it and eats it.
Jake goes pee and scoots back into the warm house, then whines because he left his kong outside LOL. He would not go get it....I had to!!!
Temps are up tho so it will melt quickly.

I agree with the article too. I walk my dog about 1.5 to 2.5 miles per day when the weather permits. In the first two months I lost 13 pounds. Now that the weather has turned bad (Snow and Ice serveral times a week) we are down to 3-4 times a week and my weight loss has dropped off to nothing but I still feel much better, I'm sleeping better and my atitude is Sky-High.

Not to mention, the dog is loving the walks and never wants to go home when we are out.

I agree that walking our dogs are good for us and the dogs. I decided that after I put on almost 10 pounds of fat, I would loose it. So after increasing my time in the gym, and changing my diet, I started taking my dog out twice a dy for 30 minutes at a time and I am on the way back to my normal weight. I have read that beagles ( the breed I have), have a tendancy to get overweight, so it is really good for him too.
