My 12 year old border Opie had surgery on Wed. for hyperparathyroidism. It is pretty rare for dogs. She had 2 parathyroids that were producing too much calcium. We caught it early because of 6 month apart "old dog" blood tests. She is doing well so far. I took her for a walk yesterday at my visit to the specialty hospital. She must stay for at least 5 days to be closely monitored because the other parathyroid glands shut down when the enlarged ones overproduced. I want everyone to remember to start blood tests when their dogs get to be 8 or 9 sometimes 7 dependent on your vet's recommendation.

I remember the thread about the older dog blood tests to screen for health problems.
I hope Opie is doing well and recovering quickly!

Opie had her sutures out today and tomorrow sees the vet for a calcium blood test. We will be monitoring her for weeks until the remaining parathyroid glands kick in with calcium. She is doing fine. She is supposed to be on house arrest but anyone who has had a border knows that is virtually impossible. She has kept the other dogs away from her because the scar is about 1 foot long on her chest.

Just remember to get your older dog blood tests regularly. The vet said we were very lucky because we caught it so soon.
