USPS identifies top dog biting cities
Ouch. Delivering the mail in Seattle is more dangerous than you might think.
And that’s because man’s best friend isn’t always the mailman’s best friend. There were 28 cases of dog-on-mail carrier attacks in Seattle in 2010, according to a list released by the United States Postal Service. But 28 dog attacks barely landed Seattle on the top 10 list. Houston is the most risky city for mail carriers, with 62 dog attacks last year. Seattle ranks No. 10, but there are 14 cities with less-friendly pooches due to several ties. At No. 2, Columbus and San Diego each had 45 attacks. Los Angeles was third with 44 attacks. It’s worth noting that the list from USPS didn’t adjust rankings based on population, and smaller cities are likely to have fewer dog-bite incidents. The data were released in conjunction with “National Dog Bite Prevention Week,” happening now. The annual campaign by the postal service aims to alert pet owners to just how much damage Fido can do when the mail carrier comes knocking. “We often hear two comments relating to the Postal Service, ‘the check’s in the mail,’ and ‘don’t worry, my dog won’t bite,’” said Houston Postmaster Matthew Lopez in a prepared statement. “Given the right circumstances, any dog can bite.” See rest of the article at: http://blog.seattlepi.com/thebigblog...acked-by-dogs/ |
